Equivocal, 1 – 2020

This artwork is intricate in their construction – while there is a clear structure to the execution of these works, they remain ambiguous as to their meaning and their construct.
Just as the work itself is equivocal, so too in design, as both works are constructed from two separate panels, coming together as one.

Artwork size: 180x340x6cm (2 panels)

Artwork materials: Gel, Acrylic, Polyurethane

Incognito 2021 SOLD

The secret is in the title! The comic figure is clearly evident but leaves you second guessing the form and plays on the concept of us all at times in our lives being something other than ourselves.

The artwork is full of ‘props’ which confuse us as to the true identity of the
figure, as they remain incognito.

Artwork Size: 200x320x6cm

Artwork materials: Gel, Acrylic, Polyurethane

The Devil’s Playground 2018

The fickle balance between good and evil, right and wrong, comes to the fore in the
powerful imagery of this piece, which depicts an abstract perspective of hell. Camilo is
asking us to face the abstract version of what dark times look like within our mind – as we
grapple with the darker moments we face, and yet at the same time there is a lighter side to
the artwork that makes us almost smile as we contemplate the piece.

Artwork size: 235x230x2cm

Artwork material: Polyurethane rubber

Encrypted Emotion Series – 2021

Just as we humans continually find a way to express our emotions in complex ways, these artworks create conflict through movement, reflecting the way in which we hide or deflect the description of our true identity. And so the works reflect the encryption of our thoughts.

Some artworks from this series have been added to a major art auction house.

Contemplation Series 2020

Contemplation draws on the combination of structure and chaos, forcing us to reflect upon the relationship between the two, as we contemplate the journey of life. The bold lateral and linear lines are interspersed with chaos, just as our routines in life (structure) are interrupted by bursts of chaos, brought upon us by uncontrolled events.

Some artworks from this series have been added to a major art auction house.

Fragments of the mind series 2020

This series examines the delicate balance of the mind and the intricacies of our thoughts, our emotions and our mental imagery. We think therefore we are, and the incredible volume of thoughts that we are capable of, create layers and complexities beyond our conscious understanding. And while so many of our thoughts are similar, they are different and unique, in the same way that these panels are similar but different, unique in their layering and complexity. Those artworks are extremely heavy due to all material used e can weight up to 30 kilos each artwork. Maico Camilo has destroyed 50 artworks of his own collection to create this series.

Lost within my own self series 2020

Grew from the exploration of the complex relationship between father and son, drawing on my own experiences.  The journey of painting these works deals with sexuality and mental health issues, especially in relation to the deterioration of the mind suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease.  The decline in thinking and social skills and the inability to function independently is explored, as I link the state of mind, both in the inability to accept, as well as the inability to think and function independently.

Weight up to 20 kilos

Through change comes hope series 2020

These artworks were created after a wine tasting visit to L’Avenir, in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Camilo was inspired by a story, learning about the unique bottle design of the L’Avenir Glenrose 2019.  L’Avenir winemaker, Dirk Coetzee, explained how the bottle design was inspired by the Protea flower, a national South African symbol.  Camilo was drawn to the geometric nature of the Protea using clear linear and robust lines to mimic the geometry. The changing landscape on the canvas is brought to life with the infusion of bursts of colour, bringing hope, crusted artworks.

Artworks size: 180x150x4cm

Weight up to 15 kilos

Materials used: Acrylic, Gel, Silicone, Urethane, Polyurethane

Obfuscation

This is a significant work, not only in size but in stature. The panels represent structure, but
the break in the black and grey panels, with bursts of colour, leaves the viewer wondering
what lies in behind’, thus creating the definition of the word obfuscation in pictorial form.

Artwork size: 250x180x4cm (5 panels)

Artwork material: Cement, Acrylic, Oil, Polyurethane
